Ruggiero Palace

Like all of Montefusco’s noble palaces, the building reflects a post 1732 earthquake earthquake accommodation and anti-seismic adaptation.

HISTORY

The Ruggiero Palace is one of the oldest noble buildings in Montefusco. Its construction dates back to the 13th century.

The Ruggiero family, the oldest eponyms of the palace, appeared on the Montefuscan scene for about sixty years (1741-1800), then left no trace, evidently emigrating elsewhere when Montefusco lost its capital or for lack of male descendants.

The surname Ruggiero merged, perhaps, with that of the De Antonelliis who, at the height of the 19th century, flaunted the title of ‘barons’ and, at the end of the century, still appeared as the owners of this building that some Montefuscani call palazzo Pironti, because in 1852, the relatives of the Montorese Michele Pironti, in order to be close to their relative who was then a political prisoner in Montefusco, lived in the aforementioned palazzo for a short time.

ART

Its current façade appears to be typically Renaissance on the side facing the square, with a beautiful six-arched loggia and Baroque on the entrance façade, on the main street.

The portal, adorned with ancient sculptures, leads to the inner courtyard with its typical cobblestone pavement. On the right, there is a pair of four traditional Montefuscan ‘riggiole’. A corridor to the left leads to the splendid roof garden with a view of the Irpinian hills.

Built on a majestic embankment, the garden contains a well-cistern and an impressive Baroque throne in carved stone.
Leaving the palace, we continue along the Corso and admire other ancient noble palaces, with their typical carved stone portals surmounted by coats of arms.
