Sanctuary Madonna del Carmine

The veneration of the Madonna del Carmine is one of the oldest and most heartfelt by the people of Montefusco.

HISTORY

As early as 1600, we find a church dedicated to Madonna del Carmine and, in addition to the church, a convent of Carmelite Fathers.

In 1612, the clergy of Montefusco donated a chalice and all sacred furnishings for the celebration of masses to the Carmelites. The monastery, however, was not very large and never achieved great importance.

In fact it was suppressed very early, in 1652. Worship did not end with the suppression of the convent, as it was already being considered to build a larger church. This church (which is what we see today) was erected around 1770. The venerable Congrega delle anime del Purgatorio (Congregation of the Souls in Purgatory) was founded in the new church, which was always supported by the people. The devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel was already one of the strongest, when it was increased in an extraordinary way by the events that occurred in 1855 and which are still alive in local traditions today; that is, the cholera epidemic that afflicted Montefusco that year and the experienced protection of Our Lady on that fateful occasion.

ART

In the old church, there was a large painting of Madonna del Carmine on the altar.

This ancient painting was replaced, in the new church, by a beautiful statue that is still admired and honoured today.

Since 2006, the church was erected as a shrine, and has always been a destination for pilgrims from all neighbouring countries (for the feast day of 16 July) and a civil feast day on the first Sunday in August with the adjoining St Sebastian’s Cemetery Chapel.
